Chapter Sixteen

The Changing Stones.

Sera yanked at the ropes binding her to a pole sunk into the ground. Deja vu kept hitting her, but that was probably the alcohol in her system. She’d thrown up a good lot of it, enough for her to fully understand what was happening. Byron had followed her to this time. He’d gotten his hands on a Traveler somehow.

And now he was going to kill her. He’d told her that himself.

She bared her teeth in a snarl as she twisted her hands, fighting to free herself. All around her, the Changing Stones were emitting a pearlescent glow while Byron strode from one to the next, drawing strange symbols on them in a dark substance that she had an awful feeling was blood.

Byron himself was naked to the waist. He glanced at her and laughed. “I was wondering when you’d start fighting. This wouldn’t be any fun if you just gave in.”

Fun? Sera kicked her feet and screamed uselessly. “And just what part of this is supposed to be fucking fun?”

Please don’t let this be… be… Her stomach churned at the sight of Byron’s bare chest. The tattoo on his upper right side was a dark spot on his otherwise glowing pale skin. Why hadn’t she fought back before this? Why had she just let him drive her out here and tie her up? She’d been expecting him to take her to a new time, but no. He was going to keep her here, in 2047, to kill her.

But even in 2047, when the city had successfully conquered the forest, there were no buildings close enough to hear her scream.

“What are you going to do to me?” she demanded. Images flashed through her mind, each one worse than the last.

Byron ignored her, finishing the pattern on the last stone. He strode back to stand in front of her. The night was so black around them that the glow of the Changing Stones was almost painful. Such a bright light. She swallowed hard, fighting down fresh nausea.

“I researched these stones,” she blurted. “I couldn’t find anything about them anywhere. Is it a werewolf thing?”

Byron’s brows arched as he faced her. “You know about werewolves?”

“We had this discussion already,” she started. But they hadn’t, had they? Not for him. It was why his grin was so cold, why his muscles were tense. This was before he confronted her on the street for him… before Bess’s death. She slumped against the pole. “Yes, I know about werewolves. Sven told me.”

Byron snorted. “Good old Sven. I suppose I’ll have to kill him after all.”

“He’s already dead. I blew him up.”

Byron smirked. “Did you see the body?”

Sera pressed her lips together. Nobody could have survived the explosion; she didn’t need to see the body.

“Well, I hope you’re right. That fucker has a tendency to pop back up when I least expect him.” Byron turned his head, staring out toward the forest. He glared hatefully into the darkness. “Are you sure he’s dead?”

“Yes,” she whispered, bile creeping up her throat.
